Homes for New Jersey Applauds Corzine

TRENTON, N.J. -- Homes for New Jersey, a nonpartisan coalition of more than 200 business, religious and community leaders supporting better housing in New Jersey, today applauded gubernatorial candidate Senator Jon Corzine for his commitment to create more affordable homes in New Jersey.

"Senator Corzine today announced some real initiatives that will help lower- and middle-income individuals and families secure decent, affordable housing," said Homes for New Jersey Chairman Timothy Touhey. "Senator Corzine's call for the state to help build and preserve 100,000 more affordable homes over the next 10 years is a key part of our campaign and a welcome announcement."

Touhey noted that affordable housing is not a Democrat issue or a Republican issue. "Too many New Jerseyans are seeing the American Dream slip away because forces beyond their control are pushing housing costs out of reach," he said. "The only solution is the creation of more affordable homes."

The Homes for New Jersey (www.homesfornj.com) campaign so far has been officially endorsed by 26 Democratic and Republican legislators and candidates for state offices. This number grows every week.

"We enthusiastically support the doubling of rental assistance, better planning, a more responsible use of eminent domain, help for the homeless, and fairer relocation assistance for those who are displaced by redevelopment," said Diane Sterner, Executive Director of the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey, which is a founding member of the Homes for New Jersey coalition.

The Homes for New Jersey campaign has met with Senator Corzine, as well as Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Forrester. Homes for New Jersey does not endorse candidates for elected office but has called on all those running for governor and General Assembly in this year's election to support the preservation and creation of affordable housing.
